A week in the life of the Cowboy

Your Hosts  —

Your hosts, Al and Von Heaton, together with their family, are dedicated to making your stay at East Pines Ranch, at Dove Creek Colorado, a memory of a lifetime. Al and Von are both descendants of the "Old West." Al is a fourth generation Colorado rancher, and Von's ancestors played a major role in the history of the West.

Al's Great-Grand parents came to Northwest Colorado in the late 1800s and his Granddad managed the remount operation on the Cary ranch at the beginning of the 20th century. His was the task of providing remounts from a two thousand head remuda (horse herd) to the cowboys on a ranch the size of Massachusetts and Vermont combined. Many of the techniques seen in the "Horse Whisperer" were used a century ago by Al's Grand father. Al has inherited his horsemanship skills from him.

Von's family history includes her Great Grandfather as a mule skinner helping build the transcontinental railroad. He was present at the driving of the golden spike at Promontory Point, Utah in 1868. He subsequently ranched in the Panhandle of Texas. He trailed cattle to Kansas and helped develop the first shipping yards in Abilene, Kansas. A tree that Von's Grandmother insisted on having was purchased on the Turkey Track Ranch. It was planted by both in a buffalo wallow on their ranch in the Panhandle. It was the only tree in that area at the time. The tree, to the surprise of scofflaws survived harsh conditions of that area. Governor John Connally of the State of Texas dedicated the tree in 1963 as a memorial to all those who persevered through the hardships of pioneer life.

East Pines Ranch and the Heaton family have deep roots in the west and in the traditions of raising healthy cattle in partnership with nature and with respect for the ecology. With Heaton true western hospitality, you'll feel part of the Old West family, too.
